Before You Arrive

Special Arrangement for COVID-19

With the fluid and unpredictable nature of the pandemic, the policies and requirements for incoming students may change frequently.  We strongly urge students to read each of the following webpages carefully as they contain important information on requirements when you land in Hong Kong.  Please revisit this webpage and the HKSAR Government (the Government) dedicated website on COVID-19 (https://www.coronavirus.gov.hk/eng/index.html) regularly so that you are aware of the latest changes to the policies and requirements.

1. Travel to Hong Kong

Q1. How long should I be in quarantine? Is there any proof that I need to show before boarding the plane?

  • The Government has categorised specified places into different groups and listed the respective boarding and quarantine requirements. You can check which group you belong to on this website and make the necessary travel plan according to the requirements.
  • You may wish to allow for some flexibility in your travel plan due to the unpredictable nature of the pandemic.

Q2. I have already been fully vaccinated in where I live. How do I know if that vaccine is recognised by the Hong Kong Government?

  • You can visit this website for the list of COVID-19 vaccines recognised by the Government.
  • If you belong to Group B, C or D and have been fully vaccinated for more than 14 days with one of the recognised COVID-19 vaccines, you have to provide documentary proof of vaccination. Please check this website to understand the requirement of the documentary proof and the definition of “fully vaccinated”.

Q3. Should I take the COVID-19 vaccines before coming to Hong Kong?

  • We strongly encourage you to be fully vaccinated before coming to Hong Kong if any vaccines that are recognised by the Hong Kong Government are available in where you live now.

Q4. Which hotels can I book for my quarantine in Hong Kong?

  • You can check the details of designated hotels on this website if you are required to undergo compulsory quarantine in a designated hotel. Please visit this website for the list and fees of the hotels.
  • As the availability of the hotel rooms is, especially during the summer holiday, very limited, you may wish to finalise your travel plan and make your bookings at your own expense as soon as possible.

Q5. How do I get to the designated quarantine from the airport?

  • The Government will arrange designated transport to your quarantine hotel from the Arrivals Hall of the airport. For the detailed procedures after arriving at the airport, please visit this website.

Q6. How do I get to the CUHK from the quarantine hotel?

  • After the completion of your quarantine, you may take public transport (e.g. taxi, bus, train, etc.) to come to the CUHK. For more information, you may refer to the “Compass for Incoming Students” prepared by the Office of Student Affairs (OSA).

Arriving at CUHK

2. Campus Accommodation

Q7. Is there any COVID-19 special arrangement for living on campus?

  • With the shared public facilities in hostels and therefore its relatively easy transmission of virus among residents, students residing on campus are strongly encouraged to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The hostel arrangements depend on whether you have been fully vaccinated or not:
  • If you have NOT been vaccinated: undergo an entry test before your admission to a hostel and a COVID-19 test every two weeks afterwards at your own expense
  • If you have been fully vaccinated for more than 14 days: you will be exempted from regular testing
  • CUHK offers a collegiate system and has nine colleges in total. Each college manages their own hostels and all students will be assigned to one of the colleges. To check which college you will go to, you can login to your student account (given that you have successfully completed student registration) for the official result on or after 26 August 2021 4:00p.m. More information on college assignment can be found here.

3. COVID-19 testing centres and fees

Q8. I am required to do a COVID-19 test after the quarantine. Where can I do the COVID-19 test?

  • If your quarantine requirement indicates that you have to do compulsory testing after your hotel quarantine or you have to do such testing as required by your hostel, you may check the following websites for the test centres and its fees.
    1. COVID-19 Community Testing Centres (Public), HK$240 per test
      https://www.communitytest.gov.hk/en/

    2. Union Hospital (Private), HK$1,000 per test
      https://www.union.org/new/covid19/covid-19_test_en.pdf

    3. Hong Kong Baptist Hospital (Private), HK$1,080 per test

4. Mode of Teaching

Q9. In the upcoming academic year, will there be online or face-to-face classes?

  • The University has announced its plan to resume face-to-face academic and student activities on campus in the new academic year 2021–22, assuming that the present trend holds, with a relatively low rate of new COVID-19 infections and an increasing rate of vaccinations. For more details on the announcement, please visit this website.

5. COVID-19 Regulations Across the City

Q10. Are there any rules and regulations against the spread of COVID-19 that I should observe while living in Hong Kong?
